I would be curious to know how and what software (virtual
modem and/or
FOSSIL's) that any using an IP only FD setup is using.

I am looking to get back into FidoNet and looked at
Taurus, but it uses BSO
style and frankly I don't get it. I used FD 2.02NC up
until about 95 or so and
had a great working system.

If your using FD2.02NC or 2.26SW I would love to know
your setup for an IP only
node, NO DIALUP, NO BBS.

What virtual modem,and preferably FREE or very low cost

IP FOSSIL if your VM doesn't include it?

I use/d IPCom and it worked kinda okay... I seen to get errors connecting with FD and some folks... I think Torus is a better solution, JoHo may or may not do
anything in the near future... anyway... If you are stuck on something to send mail that acts like FD try IREX or internet rex you might find that a better choice.

I chose Taurus as it seems to support everything out there, with its only demerits being its BSO outbound,ok....so I am biased to FD.

Well cast me as one HUGE VOTE for an IP based FD. I know when I first got into FN in the late 80's I looked at alot of the mailers and just liked the way FD worked.

If you are stuck on something to sen

I looked at IREX, but when I looked at it I guess it didn't seem to be a complete mailer and required a bunch of stuff to make it work versus FD and Taurus being complete packages. Maybe I just mis read it.....

I think I've got Taurus working now, so I can hold out till theres an IP Frontdoor....beg...plead...graveling....

I know that there are little utilities out there that wil help you convert your
outbount to BSO but I say what the heck... Use IREX until JoHo feels like he can put the effort into it. It would be nice if he just made FD an open source project and try to get others when want to help help!!

I've got things resolved that way. While I am still a big FD fan, Taurus seems to be what FD was at the time and probably still is if you operate dialup, the top of the line.

While I'd like to see an IP capable FD, I am not really a programmer so OSS or not is not a big deal...I am just a happy FD x-user and BIG FAN of FD. If OSS'ng helps to move it forward great! I'd just like to see the top mailer move
into the IP realm.

I chose to get back into Fido as I think theres somethings it has to offer over
webnet that the Internet has been morphed into, and thats not a good thing the morphing of the Internet. Plus it gives me a project to play with too.

No BBS, I am a mail only node, I never ran a BBS even when I was in Net 129 back in the late 80's and early 90's. Just FD and GIGO and BGFAX. I was quite the little FTN, uucp, fax guru at the time. Looking back over some things...I think...boy have I forgot alot.

Irex is like Taurus in that it'll send mail over the net using binkp... Irex can be configured to work directly with FD... they share directories \fd\outbound, \fd\sema\ ... bla bla bla. If you are sending mail over the net you can use Irex and any dialup nodes via FD.

Since Irex supports *.msg mailers/tosers all the software you had will run with
Irex... Anyway... everything should be easy to setup... under node manager just
set your up/downlink as a binkp connection and it should work fine... It you setup taurus you should be able to do Irex easy!!!

No dialup at all here. IP only. So from the sounds of this FD doesn't do BinkP yet to do IP only via FD. I also want one piece of software for the mailer....So I guess I will have to stick with Taurus for now. RATS.

I only got Taurus going from some very helpful people in the TAURUS echo who pointed to a goood ENGLISH help file.

You'll need a netmodem for 25 bucks then... I think there was a message a few days back on one... I used com/ip and can connect with FD via the net. I'm currently running OS/2 and use SIO to make said calls.

You might want to look into DOSBOX. http://dosbox.sourceforge.net. The
latest version (0.65 at this time) will allow you to configure a COM port to any port.

For example, a section on one of the configuration files in one of my
setups:

serial1=modem listenport:23
serial2=modem listenport:2323
serial3=directserial:COM3
serial4=disabled

This program is FREE, and is available for many platforms, including
Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux. The OS/2 version is at 0.63.
