Is that when you ask it to play music and you get a Tune In ad first? I am getting that, it barks.

I think the ads depends on what music service you use. I have a paid spotify family account. Probably would never use it by my wife and daughter do so I set it as my default music service, have never heard any advertisements.

I would not expect apple to be any less "commercial" than a google
device, but I have never interacted with one of their mini speakers so I
    don't know.

    Hello Avon!

Yep could be, I was on Spotify then moved to Apple music
when I got a 3 month free offer, to be honest I'll prob go
back to Spotify at the end of the free trial I tend to
think it's better than the Apple offering...

Can you return to Spotify as a "new" user and get their free
offerings a 2nd time? I don't think so. Eventually the moving
back and forth is a maintenance job.

I used Spotify for several months tolerating the occasional ad.
Then they offered 3 mos for 99cents/mo. Took that, thinking I
could cancel and come back after a few mos. By then, I already
had some some nice playlists and favorites and didn't want to
    lose them.

Since then, I've learned that there are tools that "migrate"
playlists between services. I know a friend who I introduced to
Spotify (and took advantage of a 3mos for $3 deal) used one
such tool to migrate over to AppleMusic. He seems happy with
the transition as he is taking advantage of a 3-mos free deal
    there now.

He lost some Spotify integration with his amplifier, and lack
of control of that amplifier from the tv, but he figured out
how to rewire for Apple support.

I'm picking no, in my case I am with a mobile phone provider that offers (almost) half price premium Spotify to their customers... so I had been using that and will likely return to it.

I used Spotify for several months tolerating the occasional ad.
Then they offered 3 mos for 99cents/mo. Took that, thinking I
could cancel and come back after a few mos. By then, I already
had some some nice playlists and favorites and didn't want to

I found this (the playlists etc.) to be an issue to when I looked to move over to Apple music to use the free 3 (or is it 6?) month offer.

Since then, I've learned that there are tools that "migrate"
playlists between services. I know a friend who I introduced to

I used one called Free Your Music and paid for a lifelong (entry level) license ... that worked to get playlists over from Spotify to Apple. I'm picking when I return I'll likely just reactivate my Spotify account and just stick with the historical playlists there rather than try and move things back from Apple.

I also have found it was easier for me to control music on devices like Amazon Alexa and Google Nest devices with Spotify than it has been when they are linked to Apple music.

I've been listening to MP3s for years as well (since around 1998 when I first discovered MP3s). I still like to buy music in lossless format though. Even though it's hard for me to tell the difference, I still like having a lossless version that I can use to convert into whatever format I want (whether it be MP3 or some other format). I also just still like to buy music on CD, since I'll own a copy and I know it won't be removed from a streaming service. I've also seen places that sell music as DRM-free lossless FLAC files, which I like.

Where do you buy lossless music? I've been using 7digital to buy either 16bit or 24bit FLAC files which I then load into Plex.

I did a little test awhile back and bought the same song from Apple Music, 7digital (16bit FLAC) and streamed on Spotify. I listened to all three on my laptop with some good quality headphones (connected via USB) and I didn't really notice a difference.

There was a song from a Canadian artist that didn't wasn't available anywhere for streaming or purchase, so I ended up buying the CD from eBay and ripping it with Exact Audio Copy. I ripped it to FLAC from the CD, though I'm not sure if ripping from CD to FLAC is worth it.

Where do you buy lossless music? I've been using 7digital to buy either 16bit or 24bit FLAC files which I then load into Plex.

The only place I've actually bought an album in FLAC format was directly from the artist (Mark Knopfler) from his web site - I saw one of his concerts, and then I saw he was recording his concerts and selling them either as a CD or lossless FLAC, and I bought the one from my local venue in FLAC format, as it was less expensive than the CD.

I've heard https://www.hdtracks.com sells lossless music though, as well as bandcamp.com (where you can buy directly from the artist).

though I'm not sure if ripping from CD to FLAC is worth it.

Why not? I think having the FLAC versions would be a good backup. You could then re-convert the FLAC versions to another format besides MP3 if you want to (it's not ideal to re-encode MP3 to another lossy format because MP3 is already lossy).

I like to rip my CDs both to FLAC and MP3 (usually once I rip it to FLAC, I'll then convert those to MP3). It was handy to have the ripped FLAC versions available - I used to have my music encoded as 128kbit MP3, and later I decided to re-encode them as variable bit rate (96K-320K). That may have improved the quality a bit, though I'm not sure if it's very noticeable.

IIRC the iTunes store has an option for you to get all your music DRM free for a slightly higher charge. For me, this is a relatively small premium that I'll gladly pay to have DRM free content, particularly because I predict Apple will eventually do away with content ownership and will transition to a 100% subscription based model. I remember hearing years ago that Apple removed DRM in the music they had for sale. I think that's a good thing. Generally these days I don't use anything Apple anymore (I used to use iTunes for playing music, but moved away from it, and I heard they actually stopped making iTunes). I like that Apple doesn't use DRM though.

I think MP3s can still give you a good space savings, especially if you like to store music on a smartphone or similar (which might only have 128GB or 256GB of storage). I have FLAC versions of my music, but only kept on a HDD I use as a backup.

Yes these days I tend to try and by the CD so I own a copy of the media
then rip it as either WAV or MP3 320Kbps.. I guess HDD space is so much better these days so smaller MP3 files can be a thing of the past.

I use Apple Music for casual listening and some music discovery (but for
that, we actually have two independent AAA radio stations that seem to play
new stuff that I like, so that seems to be the main source of my new music discoveries). Apple Music is used almost exclusively for when I'm walking, running, biking, or in the car.

I also have about 650 CDs sitting on some shelves about 6 feet from my desk, and a CD player hooked up to the speakers on the desk. I've got a 4 TB
external drive that I rip all of the CDs to FLAC on, but honestly, I never
    use it.

While I'm working, I alternate between the radio (I have a usb SDR with a FM yagi pointed at Denver.) and listening to discs. The only time I really
stream anything is when I specifically want to listen to an album I don't
have on disc. That 'listen' is sometimes followed with a trip to eBay to see how cheap I can get the actual disc for. lol

I think we started finding mp3s a little earlier... after messing around with windoze players which were pretty ordinary at the time, I ended up using some CGI scripts and... I forget what linux player, and had them all on the file server :)
    Those were the days..

I think it was when I found WinAmp (for Windows) that I started looking for MP3s. WinAmp actually seemed like a fairly uniqye player, definitely not ordinary.

I haven't bought a CD in years, not even sure where you could here now, unless you're buying secondhand ones at a flea market. The last of our "music" stores closed a couple of years back citing lack of sales.

Most of the music stores in my area have closed down too, but there are still a couple in the area. And there's a chain (I think it's a local chain) that specializes in buying and selling used albums.

When I buy a CD these days, msot of the time it's from Amazon. I'd occasionally buy one from Best Buy, but I'm not sure they sell CDs anymore. I think Target and Wal-Mart might still sell them though, but I haven't checked in a while.

At this point, I've figured that music stores mostly sold vinyl, and have had increasing sales in the last few years.

But I'm not in the know -- I still get a CD every year or two, but it's invariably some unknown things. Or, more precisely, thinking about the CDs I've gotten in the past couple of years, organ music from either a Kickstarter or a church.

But the first thing I do with any CD or DVD I get, is to rip it into some useful digital format, then half lament that I now have a physical item.

The CD's I have, and anything I acquire these days, I still tend to use 256Kbps more or less as a standard amongst my own files more than
anything else, I probably have a raft that are so old, they'd be
    128-160s.

Yep looking back at what I ripped it's a mix of 128Kbps and upwards.

Great to hear you're still consuming FM radio :) The former broadcaster in me wants to say 'thanks!' :)

I'm on Apple Music (free for 6 months) after upgrading my iPhone but when that runs out I will likely move back to Spotify as I've found their platform to be just a bit more intuitive to use.

Switching gears from the original thread a bit, I like collecting vinyl. This started about 20ish years ago when I got some hand-me-downs from a deceased relative, and I had some fun with it. I don't have a monumental collection or anything, and I'm personally skeptical of the claims audiophiles make about sound quality, but I just find the technology to be neat and love the album artwork and everything. I too like collecting Vinyl (Can't play it anymore due to my Turntable crapping out on me some 8 years ago, I will replace it with one I can hook up to a Computer though), I collected Vinyl religiously from about 1974 through 1977 then 8-Tracks till around 82, and Cassette till 85 then back to Vinyl, my vinyl collection included every Beatles album released up till 74 (so in other words all of them) A lot of ELO, and some rarities I stole from my sisters, The Beatles Hard Days night soundtrack (original 1965 release) a original 1964 I want to hold your hand 45, and a couple of other Original 1960's Beatles 45's. Now my Digital catalog spans a lot more then that, it includes full discographies of everything from Sinatra to Abba to Marty Robbins, etc. depending on my mood I will listen to just about anything..

Currently, I am doing my concert going with my wife, I call it the See them before they drop tour! Last year, I saw Tony Orlando, Frankie Valli (2nd time), and Paul Anka, I am going to start the new year out with a Doo Wop Show hosted by Bowzer of Sha Na Na, which will include, Kenny Vance, Jay Siegel of the Tokens, Joey Dee and the Starliters (didn't see these guys but they played my cousins engagement party back in like 1969!) and a bunch of other doo woppers. My thing is I want to see Kenny Vance, I missed out on Johnny Mastro so I want to see Vance.. I also have Tony Orlando planned again this year as he announced last year he will be retiring from performing this coming year so I want to see his last concert.

My dad owned a couple of radio stations when I was a kid. It kept me fed and sheltered for the first 18 years of my life. There's a lot of garbage on
the airways these days...I think out of about 70 radio stations I can get int eh Northern Colorado / Denver market, 3 of them are really good, 5 of them
are listenable in an emergency, and the rest are either hot garbage or genres I'm not interested in...mostly hot garbage.

At night I'll fire up the HF rig with an endfed antenna and see what's going
on with the AM bands. They're even worse...much much worse. It's all sports
or right wing politics. (And don't even get me started on shortwave...)

For me it's all about actually sitting there and listening to an album. For reasons I don't quite understand, putting a disc in and actually actively listening to it is a different experience than streaming an album.

He had a massive music collection they built together and because it was his account they wouldn't give it to her after he died. She was pretty devastated. I pleaded with apple but to no avail and I really felt for her. I vowed after that to never do business with them or support a walled garden ever again.

I get my music all over the place. IF your old skewl enough listen to noverdu.com:88 this is all mod tunes from back in the day it accepts requests. It will take a long time to load the request dialog since its such a huge library. I converted all the tunes from mod archive I could get. In fact they should be releasing a new one for the year end I will have to go get it and add it to the list.

I'm sure people will always flock to a polished experience rather than put work in to anything else. I do get the time constants and so does the biggity big corps.

I also have a small vinyl collection. I had a few albums from back when
I was younger. In more recent times, I would sometimes drop by a local
"flea market store" or the Goodwill to see what they had. I have found a
lot of old Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass records that way, as well as
some from Jimmy Dorsey, Tommy Dorsey, and a few rock classics, too.

I have not done that for a few years, since pre-COVID, in part because I
found myself having less time to listen to them.

Back then, the flea market store had a booth with tons of old vinyl. I
suspect the booth owner (who was never there when I was) may have
liquidated a stock from ome or more radio stations as I would
occassionally find a "radio only" copy of something, but never something
    I was interested in.

Yeah, that sucks. I don't think that'd happen today, since Apple has removed the DRM from the purchased music files. Having said that, I don't buy music from Apple. I stream from Apple when I'm on the road and what not, but
90% of my music purchases are on CD, and about 10% is on vinyl. We have a

don't buy music from Apple. I stream from Apple when I'm on the road and what not, but 90% of my music purchases are on CD, and about 10% is on vinyl. We have a very nice turntable, but the vinyl purcases are mostly more of a 'collecting' purchase than a 'listening' purchase. Less than

Where do we draw the line?

Maybe the "listening to us" part is a bit far fetched (but then again, maybe not).. or maybe the wrong terminology, but they definitely collect data on just about everything you do.

You can't tell me you've never been using Google Maps or the iPhone Maps app to go somewhere. Then shortly thereafter you scroll facebook (or some other popular social media app with ads) and see ads for places you've passed on your trip?

Do a quick web search for a nearby car dealership (or anything else for that matter). Scroll through their online inventory. Then close out of that and open up facebook, and you get to see advertisements for the same dealership - and others even.

I've even talked about going somewhere (here's where your conspiracy theory comes into play) only to see ads shortly thereafter on my phone. So much so that I can't really call it coincidence. Google's, Apple's, heck most other apps have 'changed their terms and conditions' in the past few years to include 'the collection of your information and data' while mentioning that it's NOT your personal information/data, etc.

There are plenty of conspiracy theories out there, but I don't think this is one of them. Most app makers made it blatantly obvious that they were going to do this.

Yes these days I tend to try and by the CD so I own a copy of the media then rip it as either WAV or MP3 320Kbps.. I guess HDD space is so much better these days so smaller MP3 files can be a thing of the past.

You are correct. Actively listening to users would require an insane amount of bandwidth and processing power. What app developers do instead is they include a third-party library into their code base. Once loaded, the library collects information and relays it to the ads server. It's very similar to how Google Analytics works on web pages.

I collect records too. What I like about listening to vinyl records is the fact that 'skipping' to the next song is not something that you usually do; you usually listen to the entire side.

The sequential nature of LPs, limited run time, combined with a logical break into two parts, and a size large enough for liner notes made listening to vinyl what founded a love of music. Artists crafted albums with a rhythm and a flow intended to be listened to in its entirety.

That sounds like an intellectual breakdown of the quality of vinyl music.

What I really meant to say was that music never got any better than being a 13 year-old kid listening to Rush's "Moving Pictures" through a pair of KOSS headphones in my bedroom with the lights turned down, reading the liner in the dim light.

I definitely use my phone. Vehicles GPSs constantly need to be upgraded, which dealerships usually charge (quite a bit) for. The ones I have used don't ever seem to be updated enough for any real-time information, or have even taken me to the wrong location, etc. Heck, some cars (our newest vehicle) don't even have their own GPS any more, but instead comes with Android Auto and Apple Carplay so you can just hook up your phone and use those features off your phone.

Just the other day, coming home from work, Siri told me there was an accident like 15 miles ahead and gave me an alternate route that saved me 20 minutes of sitting in bumper to bumper freeway traffic. I can definitely appreciate that. ;)

You don't have to go to the dealership to upgrade them. It seems it's typically just a flash memory card with recent maps that they need. I bought a new car recently which has GPS, and I bought a SD card for its navigation from eBay for $40, and it works just fine.

Also, I find it more convenient than getting my phone out and plugging it in, etc.. But also, I currently don't have a cell phone holder for my car. My car does have Android Auto, but still, I have to get my phone out and plug it in. The Android Auto isn't wireless - but I have seen some USB Bluetooth adapters that let you use Android Auto wirelessly.

That is nice. It seems a car GPS can detect heavy traffic, too - I had a GPS in my last car too, and I had a route that I used to drive fairly regularly, and sometimes it would route me differently, and I think it's because it was able to get traffic data from somewhere and route me around bad traffic.

To be honest, if I'm using my phone, I don't bother plugging it into the vehicle and just use the phone's GPS by itself. Seems to be more up to date, and the voice assistant is much better - as far as letting you know there's a speed check ahead, or an accident with possible alternate routes, etc.

I just haven't gotten in the habit of plugging my phone in to my car.

Tried that last weekend with Adroid Auto, all sound stopped working and the actual path to the destination didn't show on my vehicles's GPS, only on my phone. It was kinda wierd, so I unplugged and just stuck with the phone's features. My only guess is that I was driving (stopped at a stoplight) when I tried it, and it was having issues with that. You're supposed to be in park when you set it up.

Either way, all Android Auto and Apple Carplay really does is basically mock what's already on your phone anyways. That and it uses your vehicle's speakers. While I wouldn't mind using the hands free calling through those apps, the GPS doesn't really gain anything between those apps and just using your phone by itself, IMO.

This past week I've been working in the same location about an hour from home. From my house, there's basically two ways I can take to the freeway, with not much difference in time, really. Turn on my GPS on my phone in the driveway, and I'd bet 50% of the time it would tell me to go one of the ways, and the other times the other way. Almost like it's confusing itself at times. ;)

I might do that more often, if I had a phone holder in my car, but I don't.. I did have one for a while that clipped onto the rear view mirror in the middle, which I thought would be more out of the away than one that sits on the dashboard or something, but I found it to be a bit klunky.. I feel like a lot of the cell phone holders for a car could be klunky in some way, as they often clip to one of the vents or sit on the dashboard with suction cups, etc..

I think the main advatnage with Android Auto and Apple Carplay is that you don't have to use a cell phone holder in your car. With mine, you can plug in your phone and put your phone inside the center arm rest and use Android Auto, which I think is a more elegant solution than using a phone holder of some kind. But I'd probably only really use Android Auto for GPS and phone calls - and the car stereo allows phone calls via bluetooth already (without Android Auto).

That is nice. It seems a car GPS can detect heavy traffic, too - I had a

Sometimes it would tell me it detected heavy traffic and was re-calculating, but sometimes the route it would take me from the get-go would be a bit different than last time and it wouldn't say why it routed me a certain way. If it found a route it thinks is faster, I just assumed it knew it was faster because it was getting traffic data from somewhere.. There must be some way it would know which route is faster (usually the fastest & most direct route would have been the freeway, but sometimes it would route me through city/side roads for part of the way).

home. From my house, there's basically two ways I can take to the freeway, with not much difference in time, really. Turn on my GPS on my phone in the driveway, and I'd bet 50% of the time it would tell me to go one of the ways, and the other times the other way. Almost like it's confusing itself at times. ;)

    Yeah, that seems pretty reasonable.

My brother has some amount of a collection, and I think it's also partially something where he'll enjoy listening to music in an active way, and the record album form factor helps with getting into that experience.

For me, I don't listen to much music, nor want to keep extra physical items around.

But, while it's in storage, I do have some amount of a Viewfinder collection, and I like the concept of that. I'd probably buy more random things for it, too, given half a chance. I can't say it's especially _useful_, but it's fun.

Though, really, my fun-but-senseless hobby is alcohol collecting. Which is where I buy alcohol way more often than I should, and then never drink it. But I don't have a wine cellar or anything, so I can't really say that I'm trying to age something or another. And having gotten into gin, it's not like I pour it out after a few days, either.

But my wine (and other alcohols) wiki is getting pretty well populated, at least.

When my parents moved, they gave me their stereo they'd bought in 1997.
The Garand turntable was long gone, as was the BSR 8-track tape player,
but I have a mint (physical) condition Harmon Kardon 330b tuner.
Apparently people love these things because they were designed to sound
like a tuner with a tube amp. I'm going to need to replace some caps
before they go in the near future.

I wouldn't always need to plug mine in either. I could stand it up in
a cup holder, though I sometimes worry about looking down that far at
my phone when needed. :) I feel safer glancing over at a screen if I don't need to take my eyes off the road too far.

My new car doesn't have voice navigation like my old Prius, and doesn't
have a flat dash that lends itself to a phone sitting on a holder. I
keep my phone in a cup holder, and I kinda like it that way. I can send destinations from Google Maps on my phone to the car and see them there,
and use a button on my steering wheel to access Google Assistant, and
that's it. I find it much less distracting.

Interesting.. I don't think I can do that with my car, but if I could, I'd probably use that feature.

You are correct. Actively listening to users would require an insane amount of bandwidth and processing power. What app developers do instead is they include a third-party library into their code base. Once loaded, the library collects information and relays it to the ads server. It's

I do think that a lot of the, "I was just passing by x, and then they gave me an ad for y" is well-explained by, "advertisers get your location data on a regular basis".

Because, yeah, everyone with a phone is getting actively surveilled constantly (but just by the phone companies and anyone (police) who can easily get access to it), and it doesn't take a whole lot of additional permissions to send along location data to advertisers. Or even just Google going, "here, let me find all the ads for things in your current area".

And the advertisers/app makers/Google do their best to get us to agree to give up the information, generally without realizing that that's what we're agreeing to.

So, yeah, no need for any conspiracy theories when there are entirely plausible (if still awful) ways for various things to happen without much data or much human intervention.

Yes these days I tend to try and by the CD so I own a copy of the med then rip it as either WAV or MP3 320Kbps.. I guess HDD space is so mu better these days so smaller MP3 files can be a thing of the past.

This is the way. Storage is dirt cheap nowadays (especially HDDs).

for some reason, I heard the Madalorian voice when I read that! :)

Interesting.. I don't think I can do that with my car, but if I could, I'd probably use that feature.

Yeah, my new car has the low-end entertainment/tech stack. No voice
command, except if your phone is connected via Bluetooth it'll run
Siri/Google Assistant if you press the phone button on the steering
    wheel.

My old Prius had voice command, so you could say "destination XXXXX" to pull
up the map, or "Play XXX" to play an artist, genre, or album, or "Dial
XXX" to call someone. With my new car, if you look up a destination
with the MyBMW app on your phone, there's a button to send it to the
    car.

Toyota had it down pretty well, considering this was a 2014 model.

I think audiophiles prefer Apple Music but I can't tell a difference. However my sister was laid off at Spotify recently so I have an axe to grind with them and will probably cancel my service. That'll show 'em! hehe

Spotify tried to monetize podcasts. I think that was a billion (or two) dollar mistake.

The fact that they paid Joe Rogan as much as they did while they pay musicians shockingly little is also something I think is shitty.

It was 200+ million, I think.

Rogan is a different "product". I doubt that they could apply
the same royalty-based system per episode or per avg 4-min
segment that a song is based on.

Also, the same song gets replayed over and over by the same
listener vs hearing one podcast is often enough for one person.

Anyway.. his initial Spotify contract is supposedly over by
now. About $75K per episode (daily?). Dunno how Spotify can
    sustain that.

Consider this: Joe Rogan gets something like 200 million downloads per month. Taylor Swift gets someething around 105 million listens per month. He also helps draw a customer that Taylor Swift definitely doesn't (simply because millions of people do not consume music, or are interested in it at all.. strange, i know)

    https://www.billboard.com/business/streaming/taylor-swift-spotify-streams-how-m uch-worth-1235524477/

This link says that Taylor Swift easily makes the amount of money Joe Rogan does for a similar draw, and by and far significantly more when albums are
    released..

It's really an apples to oranges comparison, but I don't think Joe Rogan is being overpaid for what he brings to Spotify.. He probably earns them similar moeny to what Taylor Swift does.

    That's pretty impressive to me.

Streaming has given musicians access to wider audiences but musicians typically earn far less now that their songs are streamed and not individually licensed purchases.

I'm friends with the singer of a very well known metal band and at this point they only actually make any money from merch. Album sales are crap these days, streaming pays shockingly little, and touring pays their label well but the musicians kinda get screwed. The streaming thing and the label/touring thing are two separate issues, to be sure, but streaming has killed off a lot of income for musicians. So I was basically saying that Spotify started as a music streaming company. It pays musicians crap for their art being streamed. But a podcast gets a $200mil contract. For musicians, it sucks. Rogan was a gamble that clearly didn't pay off, but my hope is that streaming music will prove unsustainable as a business model and the traditional "license this art by buying a copy forever" will come back into fashion.

    One can hope :/

With the examples above, I don't really have any interest in either one.
