I think you can also set the TZ environment variable and it will read g0> that.
I do have both TZUTC and TZ set, BBBS requires it. My /etc/profile includes..
export TZUTC="-0700"
export TZ="PDT+7"
That'll change when PDT kicks back in.
I'll have to double check all of the steps it takes to find the timezone g0> but different distributions do different things so I'll start with that.
I don't mind adding an /etc/timezone if that would help but I don't know what that file should look like.
