Checking for empty display code contents in a menu?

Hello everyone!
Is there some easy and/or clever way to check whether the contents of a display code is empty inside a menu?
E.g., if <pipe>DP (selected file transfer protocol) is empty, I would like the menu to display something like:
(F) File Transfer Protocol -> [ask every time]
...whereas if it is not empty, I would like it to display the actual value, e.g.:
(F) File Transfer Protocol -> Zmodem
Many thanks in advance! =)
Best regards
Björn
