• Ver. 3.19b and WinXP?

From Cozmo@LUN to All on Thursday, December 29, 2022 20:43:00
Will v3.19b run on WinXP? I keep getting this message: "The procedure entry point could not be lacated in the dynamic link library WS2_32.dll"
My guess is no but I thought I would ask.

    Thanks

why are you trying to put windows xp on a computer on the internet?

So meanwhile, like before, what you represent on the website is something
with defects. this guy got 3.19b and had problems.

You could just put a fixed up version with the installer for the new people.
I know in this case it's trivial because nobody wants to run xp, but there have been more serious issues.

You're really throwing a roadblock by ignoring what you represent and putting so much into cvs and later git.

New people don't know how to update properly. that's why synchronet has such a bad reputation and people can say only programmers can run it.

It's bad enough we lost most of our users, now we are losing new sysops.
Please just try to put yourself in these people's shoes. Shit gets really convoluted with the way you guys do things. It could be worse, but it could also be better.

So meanwhile, like before, what you represent on the website is something with defects.

Every software program of any substance has defects.

this guy got 3.19b and had problems.

    And he has a solution:
    https://wiki.synchro.net/install:dev

You could just put a fixed up version with the installer for the new people.

It takes literally *days* of work to put together an official release. I don't do that more than once or twice a year for a good reason.

I know in this case it's trivial because nobody wants to run xp, but there have been more serious issues.

I'm not clear what your point is. If the sysop wants to run a newer version that compatible with XP, he can.

You're really throwing a roadblock by ignoring what you represent and putting so much into cvs and later git.

Synchronet has official releases more often than any other BBS software... and it's not frequent enough for you?

Synchronet has nightly development builds available for Windows and Linux-x86, and that's not enough for you?

New people don't know how to update properly.

"People" do it all the time.

    that's why synchronet has
such a bad reputation and people can say only programmers can run it.

Because I don't make releases often enough? I don't buy that.

It's bad enough we lost most of our users, now we are losing new sysops. Please just try to put yourself in these people's shoes. Shit gets really convoluted with the way you guys do things. It could be worse, but it could also be better.

you could just put a fucking release file on the website that isnt broken.

It's like you are actually allergic to creating a release. In the past you've gone years and years. Is there something really hard about it?

Granted, this isn't as bad as when scfg and sbbsecho had problems in the past, but I think you are a bit disconnected on this.

It's your shit you can do what you want. What I don't like is you don't want to put yourself into those people's shoes. I don't see why you won't put up a perfect release on the web just for face. I wouldn't be able to let it go like that.

You wouldn't do this with anything else. Would you build a porch for someone and leave a step out? then they have to look on your website to know that there's a stack of boards and nails behind the house?

It doesn't matter now because we have no users and very little sysops, but i'm just wondering how you could be blind to how this affects newcomers.

Are you serious - because it doesn't run on XP, it's broken?

if you dont want to do it, i'll do it for you.

You have no idea what goes into making a Synchronet release for Windows.

It's like you are actually allergic to creating a release.

Nope, I just know what it takes to do it right.

    In the past
you've gone years and years. Is there something really hard about it?

Yeah, a lot of testing on different systems and configurations.

Granted, this isn't as bad as when scfg and sbbsecho had problems in the past, but I think you are a bit disconnected on this.

There is no such thing as "a perfect release" of any software of any complexity. There will be bugs. You just seem to have a particular peeve about this one.

You wouldn't do this with anything else. Would you build a porch for someone and leave a step out? then they have to look on your website to know that there's a stack of boards and nails behind the house?

    Luckily, I don't build porchs.

It doesn't matter now because we have no users and very little sysops, but i'm just wondering how you could be blind to how this affects newcomers.

I'm not blind. The Windows XP sysop could:
    1. run the previous release (v3.18b), which I think worked fine on XP
    2. run the development build (v3.19c at the time, now v3.20a), which also works fine on XP, as far as I know

The Windows XP sysop has options. I don't know why you're involved in the discussion at all - you said yourself they shouldn't be running Windows XP on an Internet-connected computer (e.g. a BBS).

Sometimes you just have to learn as you go and not be handed everything at once. You learn alot more even though it make take some time. the Dev team goes way out of there way and above and beyound with what they do on there free time along with all the support that is given in the IRC Channel which has always been great. The only problem i have had and it's quite irrating is that when they switched from CVS to git it's hard for me to update things on my own. The date modifed on all the files in the zip packages are set to the date that it's released and ready to download each day. It really used to help me when i could tell what files were modified and when they were last modified. I do read the updates on the message boards but at times i fall behind to know whats been changed. i have not figured a good work around yet so i am just waiting until the dev team has the time to fully release a full update or until i learn a work around that works for my situation. this is on me not on the dev team but if they could help me figure out a better way or a work around it would make my life a lot eaiser.

Thank you guys for your support as always

    it go like that.

There is no such thing as "a perfect release" of any software of any complexity. There will be bugs. You just seem to have a particular peeve about this one.

    Well it's happened frequently.

No, there has never been a bug-free Synchronet release and I know there never will be one.

You just know it's broken like before, yet
it's still on the website for download as a release.

I wouldn't even call the issue you're describing "a bug", but whatever, yeah, it's a known issue. There's *always* known issues in every software release even at the time of release.

It just seems sloppy, and I don't know why'd you'd be happy doing that.

The release still works for fine for 99.9% of the sysops that want to use. And there are other versions available for that other .1%. I'm pretty happy with that, yeah.

It would probably just be better to yank the installer and tell people
to just grab things on git and get the binaries from your file server if needed.

    That's stupid talk.

The Windows XP sysop has options. I don't know why you're involved in the discussion at all - you said yourself they shouldn't be running Windows XP on an Internet-connected computer (e.g. a BBS).

i just tested it out because he said it wasnt working.
then i see it's an old bug and the release is still there with that issue. That's one of the reasons people badmouthed synchronet over the years. People had one problem and then decided to go to mystic.

Please, do me a favor and go to mystic and tell me have you have zero issues.

Like I said, it's yours and you can do what you want with it. I just couldn't believe you were blind to what was going on. This XP thing is just a little stupid issue, but there's been bigger ones in the past that you handled the same way.

"busted" - I think exaggerating a little there. It doesn't work on Windows 95 either, yet you don't take issue with that fact?

I don't know if you don't care, or it does not compute or what.

Software has issues. And this particular issue has already been fixed and the version with that fix is available for download and future versions should not have that same issue, but they'll have other, new issues. It's a fact of life.

    it go like that.

There is no such thing as "a perfect release" of any software of

    any
complexity. There will be bugs. You just seem to have a particular peeve about this one.

like i said, it's your baby so you can do what you want.

I didn't know what your mindset was.

I certainly don't agree with it and I don't think you've seen much of the outcome in the synchronet fishbowl.

You're being willfully ignorant by saying I don't know what I'm talking about. I'm going by what i've seen in the past 22+ years.

Software has issues. And this particular issue has already been fixed and the version with that fix is available for download and future versions should not have that same issue, but they'll have other, new issues. It's a fact of life.

Reminds me of my second wife. She was an amazing cook, great in bed, always kept the house clean, chopped wood like a champ, organized all the bills and my business dealings, but not once did I ever get a decent BJ.

It was fixed *after* the v3.19b release, so that'd be in v3.19c or

Where can I d/l 3.19c or 3.20a Can't seem to locate the file.

I mean since you know all about the inner workings of Windows and SBBS - telling the author he doesn't know how
to program the software that has been around for more than 30 years. Hmmm...geee I think he does know. I have set you

    no thanks, not interested.

And like i said, it's his software. so if he wants to leave up releases all the time that have issues, he can. This time it wasn't bad but there were other ones with bigger issues. Personally I would patch it and have it up for download. not many new people know about the dev builds and the git (and before then, cvs)

oh i thought running a bbs was my job and i was ordered to run this bbs software. thanks for clearing that up, genius.

Rob's a good developer but there's nothing wrong with someone who actually runs the software (instead of just running setup.exe and leaving it sit) giving some critique. Especially when I have ran it since 2000.

now go back under your rock.
