• Apocalyptic Fiction

From Kurt Weiske@1:218/700 to All on Thursday, September 15, 2011 12:51:00

I've been reading apocalyptic fiction lately - zombies (World War Z,
Walking dead, 28 days later), ecological crises (The Road),
plagues (The Stand is an oldie but a goodie), comet impact (Lucifer's
    Hammer) and so on.

I just finished "World built By Hand", a book about a post-oil, post
government america where the economy has collapsed and communities are
    forced to become self-reliant.

When the dust settles, people are forced to start again. While there's lots
of salvage to be re-used, manufactured products are scarce and eventually
will be gone. People are living a life I'd estimate comparable to pre-industrial revolution culture, but with salvaged modern materials.

Most of the skills people had before the event are irelevant, and many of
the skills people need to survive are long-lost in today's disposable, mass manufacturing culture.

What skills do you have that you could use or teach to help start over?

I'm tempted to make pre-indutrial crafting into my new hobby. Who knows, it might come in handy. :)

Lies, deceit, politics, social engineering, manipulation, propaganda, business,
leadership, management, religious and/or Bible knowledge (for social control and manipulation) would be some I have.

    TUB is not dead.

It is in suspended animation with 1 or 2 beats a year.

so, in the tradition of Princess Bride, it's just "mostly dead" :)
